AJ & Regi

AJ & Regi

Some years ago, I had the chance of phoning Mr. A.J.Canagaratna to convey my wishes on his 70th birthday. My friends, like M.Nithiyanandan, often praised the noble qualities and gentlle behaviour of A.J.Canagaratna, and enjoyed recalling wonderful memories of him in Jaffna.

M. Nithiyanandan once wrote that the one reason for him to visit Jaffna was to see A.J.Cangaratna. He recalled that AJ and he visited an Aunty of AJ. The aunt sent Jeyaraj as if he were a small boy (they called him Jeyaraj) to buy sugar to make tea for the vsitors. AJ played the role and went willingly.
Mr. Pathmanaba Iyar tried to invite AJ to Europe. Once I was asked to visit Jaffna, to be with AJ, to accompany him to Colombo and then to London. I had dreams of tasting different types of wines with AJ. But Aj refused, as usual with a smile, to leave Jaffna.
As I attended the funeral of Regi Siriwardane in Borella, a couple of years ago, I felt alone, I searched for known persons among the visitors but knew only Ms. Sunila Abeyasekare. I paid my last respects to Regi and talked to a gentleman to whom the visitors expressed their condolences.
He asked me how it was that I knew Mr. Regi Siriwardane. I came to know Regi only in Tamil-letters through A.J.Canagaratna. 11th october I received email news that Mr. AJ had passed away.
The two, our contemporary talanted personalities whom I had been eager to meet, I never did meet: I “met” the first only in his coffin, and the other, only over the phone.
