Kondolenz

Zum Tod von K. Pararagasingham:

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm
Upon your face
And the rain fall soft
Upon your fields.
And until we meet again
May god hold you in the Palm of his hand.

-An old Irish verse-

Lieber Para,

  1. It is with great sadness that we learned of Comrade Para's sudden passing. We share the grief of Mallika and Uma and other family members.

I first knew Comrade Para and Mallika in the 1970s, through various events and activities linked to the CMU. It was a vibrant moment in our history, with many political discussions, and lasting friendships were built during this time. In later years, I encountered Para and his family in Germany, and elsewhere in Europe, at activities organized to promote peace in Sri Lanka.

What I appreciated most about Comrade Para was his sense of decency and humanity, and his unswerving commitment to those qualities. Through all the negative and positive experiences of exile, he maintained his sense of humour, his love of life and his creative energy which was expended on a thousand diverse activities, including writing and publishing the work of Tamil writers throughout the diaspora, and organizing cultural and political activities that, very importantly, linked the youth of the disapora with the adults of their homeland. The Tamil literary conferences that he took the lead to organize are legendary in their creativty and expanse.

I also appreciated the way in which Conmrades Para and Mallika created a very democratic and household, sharing tasks, respecting the voices of all family members equally and allowing their children the space to grow in Germany without ever feeling alienated from their language, culture and country of origin. This harmony exemplifies the living out of theory in the best of ways.

At a time when the voices of moderation and wisdom in our island are growing lesser by the day, we will surely miss Para's wisdom and laughter.
